Historic Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, AR served as the host campus for this year’s National TRiO Day for the state of Arkansas. Operating on the theme “ KEEP CALM….GIVE BACK”, the 175 plus attendees enjoyed a day filled with information about academic success, educational access, and information on various academic programs.
Current SWASAP President-Elect, Mrs. Mary Kate Snow, was on hand to provide words of empowerment to the attendees. Our AASAP President, Mrs. Shola McFadden-Kittrell read the proclamation from Governor Asa Hutchinson. The group heard a powerful address from Arkansas TRiO Achiever 2014 Mr. Joe Berry, Executive Assistant to the Chancellor (ASU-Beebe.) He spoke candidly about his struggles as a high school student and how he went to college on a whim. However, he was aware of how powerful this opportunity was and he took full advantage of it. He discussed the importance of connecting to resources, asking for help, and taking risk. He attributes his involvement with TRiO Programs to the success he currently has in life.
The focus of the day was about service and giving back. Through the amazing efforts of Arkansas TRiO, we raised $350.00 for the Coins for College Scholarship Campaign and we donated over 500 toiletries/snacks/ and other personal items to Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
The afternoon activity consisted of a College Success Student Panel. The panel was moderated by UB Summer Mentor & Philander Smith College Student Ron’ay Coleman. Each of the panelist, who currently enrolled in college, were able to provide a great deal of knowledge and expertise about the nuances of being a successful college student. The discussion was filled with great stories, laughs, and wonderful tid-bits of wisdom that if applied could provide for many years of success.
Despite the inclement weather TRiO Day 2015 was well attended, filled with great information, and exclaimed all the amazing works that happen within in TRiO Program throughout the State of Arkansas.
